ANDRÉ MASSON – Petite retrospective entre amis

Our exhibition is an expansive homage to the French Surrealist André Masson (1896-1987). The broad spectrum of work, which spans numerous genres, illuminates a sophisticated plexus of thematic and stylistic references.

Entitled Petite rétrospective entre amis, the exhibition presents approximately 60 paintings, drawings, and sculptures of museum quality to trace and shed light upon diverse biographical and artistic threads and principles of one of the most versatile and important artists of the 20th century.

André Masson’s fantastic, lyrically spontaneous painting style oscillates between emblematic depiction and graphic arabesque. Automatism and later experimentation with calligraphy led Masson to the development of a unique and personal artistic ideography. His paintings and drawings anticipated the work of the Art Informel, and are echoed in the “psychograms” of Hans Hartung as well as the “drip paintings” of the American Jackson Pollock.
