Italian artist Andrea Ventura was born in Milan in 1968. In his early twenties, he moved to the United States and built his career as a brilliant illustrator in New York. His works were published in major publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone Magazine, Time Magazine, and The New Yorker. After nearly two decades, Ventura returned to Europe and has since lived between Berlin and Milan. His illustrations have subsequently appeared in publications including AD Magazine, Der Spiegel, and Zeit Magazin.
Yet Andrea Ventura has always been more than an illustrator. He is above all an independent artist with a particular sensitivity for atmosphere in his work. His paintings are characterized by strong cast shadows, and his compositions often appear almost photographic. His subjects — often drawn from the tradition of classical art history — include interiors, portraits, nudes, and architectural views, while at the same time revealing a fascination with the everyday. The interiors in particular represent an intimate approach to painting, almost as if emerging from a kind of subconscious. With his quiet, deserted rooms, the artist evokes a sense of solitude and a longing for something lost. A disheveled bedspread, a casually placed glass, or an arrangement of pictures on the wall hint at the presence of an inhabitant who is nevertheless absent from all compositions, leaving the viewer with a lingering sense of mystery.
