Karel Appel’s general interest in strong colors becomes obvious in the large-sized painting Witnessing the dawn. Despite his orientation on abstract Expressionism, this painting also shows concrete elements. Figuration is essential during this period and a principal which also manifest itself in Karel Appel’s work as stage designer at the theater.
In the picture two figures, a big massive mother-like figure and a small child-like figure both gaze at the arising dawn in front of them. The bigger figure reaches out its hands towards the smaller one. The smaller one grabs it with both its hands. The strong contrast of the different color fields is striking and contrary to what the title of the painting “Witnessing the dawn” would suggest: a darker coloring.
Furthermore, Appel’s works are passionately inspired by the expressionist style and the vigor of van Gogh.
