Einführung:
Eine höchst subtile und durchdachte Komposition kennzeichnet das Ölgemälde “Les Oiseaux”: Die Bildebenen sind schichtenweise übereinander gelagert, von einem Bilduntergrund ausgehend folgt eine Zeichenebene, dann die zentrale Darstellung der Vögel in der linken Bildhäfte, darüber eine gedämpft grün-gelber „Überzug“, der die ganze Szene ins Visionäre, Traumhafte entrückt.

A very sensitive and ingenious composition characterizes the painting “Les Oiseaux”, created by Max Ernst in 1933. Different layers of paint are superimposed one on the other. Thus the priming is followed by a flat of drawing, followed by the central subject, the depiction of the birds at the left part of the canvas, and over that, a soft layer in green-yellow transfers the whole scene into visionaries and dreamlike.
