Marino Marini

DIE GALERIE is particularly pleased to round off the exhibition year 2022 with a spectacular, historical show of works. We present the Italian artist Marino Marini (1901-1980) in an extensive exhibition, primarily focusing on the sculptural work with pieces from the years 1937 to 1954 and with a selection of prints, hereby presenting other creative aspects of the artist. In this way, we aim at honouring the significance and the renewed relevance of this artist. The œuvre of the Italian sculptor reflects the most critical years in the 20th century history of Europe with a visual language that, while adhering to the classical canon, still finds its own unique forms of expressing change. This becomes most evident in the artistic development of Marini’s central theme, the equestrian portrait. This type of imagery was ever-present in his work, as was its ambivalence between a representative symbol of power and an expression of harmony between the human and the natural world. Under the impact of fascism, democratization, and the simultaneous East-West conflict, Marini‘s formal style evolved significantly from an ideal image to the depiction of a distorted, unhinged world. Thus, in a time of global upheaval, Marini‘s artistic position is more modern than ever.
