Poetic, mystical, mysterious, surreal – these are the attributes that characterize the imagery of the renowned Spanish painter José Enguídanos (born 1962), whose recent paintings are currently on display in a solo exhibition at DIE GALERIE. In his works, created between 2010 and 2013, the Albacete born and based Castilian artist reveals himself as a traveler who, in his hushed landscapes and images of forlorn architecture, permits the viewer to accompany him on his journeys to the most hidden, secretive places of the world. The desert sands and palm trees of California and Tabarca, the river landscapes of China, the desolate streets and ruined automobiles of Cuba and Mexico, mystical views of the moon, stranded ships – these are the subjects of José Enguídanos. His atmospheric compositions reveal an only apparent realism; to a far greater extent, the artist creates fictions that are continually ruptured by elements both surreal and metaphorical, if not ironic and bizarre. He embeds his protagonists in desolate and illusive pictorial realms accentuated by light and shadow, brightness and darkness, and which all the while convey, through their non-specific perspective, an impression of infinite distance.
