Get the picture! – Under this programmatic title, DIE GALERIE is dedicating a solo exhibition to the important contemporary German painter Johannes Heisig (*1953) for the second time. On display are around 50 new paintings by the artist, who turned his back on the urban hustle and bustle of Berlin after 15 years and moved to the Brandenburg countryside in 2015.
Heisig’s thematic diversity knows no bounds, ranging from German-German history and pop culture themes – predominantly influenced by his own biography and life in Berlin – to classical (urban) landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, including numerous public figures.
But even though Heisig remains true to this diversity in his unmistakable and expressive artistic style, his most recent works also reveal the first echoes of his new surroundings: skate park scenes from unusual perspectives have been joined on the easels of his new studio by numerous colorful flower still lifes and expressive landscape studies. He dedicates an entire requiem to a hornet, thus seeming to return once more to the origins of painting, to the existential questioning of life and the self.
