Johannes Heisig‘s (*1953) pictorial worlds are manifold and multifaceted, alluring and enigmatic – a reflection of reality and dreams at the same time. The impasto brushstrokes of his paintings flow on the canvas in countless layers, like an inexhaustible stream of thoughts, one overpainting after the other. In his works the artist processes his thoughts and is able to transfer both the poetic beauty of an idyllic landscape in the setting sun and the doubts, fears and dreams of every human being onto his canvas. Almost anything that attracts the artist‘s attentive gaze can be turned into painting. Thus, in Johannes Heisig‘s latest show of works Betrachtungen | Reflections, by now the fourth solo exhibition of the painter in DIE GALERIE, a broad spectrum of different subjects can be found: Splendid bouquets of flowers, whether still in full bloom or already withered, as well as mundane objects and exotic figurines populate his still lifes, occasionally accompanied by an animal skull as a symbol of the Memento Mori; urban and rural landscapes find their place in the artist‘s oeuvre and impress with their dynamic and unconventional perspectives. An essential focus in Johannes Heisig‘s art lies in the very essence of human existence, narrated through socio-political scenes, portraits or self-observations, either on canvas or on paper. Through his works, the artist creates authentic „Bilder vom Erzählen” (storytelling images) – to quote the new cycle of drawings dedicated to the German writer Wolfgang Hilbig – and transport the viewer into an alternate, multi-layered reality.
