Mehler sculptures are characterized by a high technical quality and an unmistakable visual language. His sculptures made of CORTEN steel are the culmination and result of his many years of sculptural development, which in terms of content moves in the field of tension between organic forms and growth according to geometric measure and number and balances this in a variety of ways. In their physical presence, Herbert Mehler’s sculptures combine the hard, durable material of steel with the warm surface appearance and velvety feel of rust marks, which, exposed to the weather, give the material a unique effect. A balance between the meditatively calm, flowing movement of the sculptures and the lively rhythm created by opposing movements and rotations creates an optically perceptible energy that is communicated to the viewer. A characterization of the works as “parallel nature” or “parallel world” – terms that the artist found for his work with Paul Cézanne – opens up in so far as the sculpture creates its own reality, which stands between organic growth and decay and the moderate architecturally constant.
