Einführung / Introduction:
Dorothea Tanning was the set and costume designer for the first production of George Balanchine’s ballet Bayou. The ballet was set to the music of Virgil Thomson’s Acadian Songs and Dances (1947). The story depicts a boy poling through a mysterious bayou on a small boat where he encounters a group of Acadians. The production premiered on February 21, 1952 at the New York City Ballet, City Center of Music and Drama, New York, NY. This drawing is one of eleven costume designs Tanning created for Bayou.
